Yellow Deli Dilemma

Yellow_deli

Chattanooga has erupted in controversy over the opening of a new deli downtown. Some say the owners are simply a cult trying to recruit students from UTC. Others say they are a harmless group of people living out their faith in their community. As with most polarizing controversies the truth probably lies somewhere between the extremes. My problem is rather than looking at facts people in the Bible Belt tend to jump to conclusions and not let little things like facts get in their way. I recently responded to a string of opinion articles on the Chattanoogan.com site concerning the controversy. You can check out the opinion articles here. I would love to have input from those who have dealt with the Yellow Deli or the Twelve Tribes group that runs it. I have included my response to the opinion articles below. What are your thoughts?

My Response to the Chattanoogan...

I hesitate to respond to this opinion article because so many people have already written but it bothers me to see so many half-truths and false assumptions. I feel compelled to respond.

The first unfounded accusation is that the Yellow Deli located near UTC only to take advantage of "lots of non-religious individuals and a place where people are lonely and searching for meaning". That is a very broad assumption about the student body at UTC. My oldest daughter starts there this fall and I think she is pretty well rounded. She isn't lonely or searching for meaning; she is simply attending a local college in order to further her studies as are most college students. The Yellow Deli will be grossly outnumbered at a rate of at least 10 to 1 by all of the Christian organizations on campus including, non-denominational Protestants, Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, and numerous other Christian clubs and organizations. Do these organizations so poorly represent their beliefs that the only place students can find answers to their real life problems is from a "cult" in a sandwich shop?

Christians in the Bible Belt jump at the chance to expose a "cult" and are quick to deny them the same liberties that they themselves enjoy. The problem is that most define a cult as anyone who doesn't look, act, and worship just like they do. Every Church claims to want prayer in the schools until they realize that it's not just their denominational beliefs that will be represented in those prayers.  I wonder if some of the Mennonite community came down from Muddy Pond to sell their homemade bread, sorghum, and crafts at the Chattanooga Market would they be met with the same reception as the Yellow Deli? After all they are a cult because  Mennonites don't allow their children to watch TV or attend movies and if they disobey they are quick to punish them by striking them with a rod.

If the truth about a group isn't enough to change your way of thinking why not throw in a story of how they are followers of Sun Myung Moon and their leadership was deported? All accounts of the Twelve Tribes that I read list Tennessee native Gene Spriggs as their founder and leader. Even with our new Homeland Security policies I don't think you can deport a US citizen born in East Ridge, Tennessee. This kind of gross misstatement of facts does little to win educated people over to your line of rationale.

It is obviously far easier these days for people in the Bible Belt to tell us what they are against than to simply live by example as Jesus did. Hypocritical, bigoted, and politically motivated are the terms many use to describe today's church. The church is so out of touch with this upcoming generation it's no wonder that most young adults never return to it after High School. Could it be that the hurting needy people all around us can't hear the Truth because of all the noise coming from the Church itself?

Bigger Than a Mountain?

In my last entry I alluded to some of the mountains that stood in our way for last Sunday’s Worship Experience. Let me elaborate. Due to some unforeseen circumstances we needed a replacement drummer at the last minute. Daniel was more than willing to fill that role but there was one problem, Journey doesn’t own a set of drums and neither does Daniel. Everyone called their friends looking for a set of drums for Sunday but none were to be found. Richard (Journey’s bass player) mentions he has an old set in his basement but we probably wouldn’t want to use them live. With no other option the guys go and literally dig Richard’s drums out of his basement. We used those drums last Sunday without even having time to wipe all of the dust from them. God met our need.

Fast forward to Monday afternoon... Journey has purchased its own drums and appears to be on course for practice that evening. Then another mountain appears something maybe even bigger than a mountain. We have been asked by our landlord not to practice in the warehouse anymore because it is bothering the neighbors. Crap! Just when we thing things have smoothed out another mountain pops up. Our landlord jokes that we are the first church that he has ever had a complaint against for being too rowdy. Icon_smile  To top things off the starter goes out on Mark’s vehicle. Now we have to find a place to practice and a way to get all of the equipment there. To make a long story short we secured a temporary location, got all of the gear moved in and out, and had practice. One of the songs we practiced was very appropriate for all of the obstacles we face. Curious? Come to Sunday’s Worship Experience and hear the song performed live.

Moving Mountains

We plan to open with Moving Mountains in the morning. Check out the Lyrics:

Bridges are burning, heads are turning to a sky that's painted red.
Your voice grows calm inside my head.
Cars are crashing, buildings collapsing, and your whispering in my ear
Come with me my dear.

No matter what goes on around us we have to remember that God is in control. Almost every week something crashes at Journey. Our Enemy doesn't want things to go smoothly. Tomorrow we are finishing out our Epic series and we will be talking about battles. The Journey team battled a good bit today and came out weary but victorious. Although I sometimes get tired of the constant battles I always remain encouraged because I've read the end of the Book and I know who goes down in flames! Rev 20:10

Set List April 6th

We had an awesome set list for last Sunday's worship so I thought I would share it with you guys:

  • Ladies and Gentlemen by Saliva
  • What this world Needs by Casting Crowns
  • Glorious One by Steve Fee

All of these songs really fit with the theme of our Epic series which focused on Jesus who is the Hero of the story.

April Fool's Day Fun

In case you haven't noticed yet I am the member of the Journey staff most likely to stoop to pulling immature practical jokes. Think of it as an anti-spiritual gift. Also think of it as the reason I have never been asked to chaperon a youth retreat, or at least asked to do it twice. It struck me this morning that it was April 1st and that I know what pushes Mark's buttons. Who could pass up such a great opportunity? I rapidly went into alter ego mode and created a blog that slams Journey Chattanooga. I then sent Mark an anonymous email as bait. Although Mark says he was a little bit suspicious he did post on the fake blog as well as posting a rebuttal on his own blog. Anyway we both had a good laugh about it when he started quizzing me and asking had I received any anonymous emails today.

Happy April Fool's Day!!

A Week in the Life of a Church Planter

It's amazing to me what can happen in a week's time. This time last week I was recovering from a very stressful Easter Sunday. I had about 4 hours of sleep the night before, our Pro-Presenter software was giving me a fit, we didn't have enough help on our set-up crew and I was physically and mentally worn out. The week just kept getting worse when Mark wrecked his truck. Just when I thought it couldn't get much worse I get a call on Saturday that we have no lead singer for the band! AGGHHH! I had no idea what to expect on Sunday, it seemed that every time we got one thing under control then something else went wrong. Then something really cool happened; God stepped in and showed us He really is in control. This past Sunday was one of the best for Journey. We had plenty of great volunteers, set-up and tear down smoothest and fastest ever, people stepped up and filled in gaps in the band and we even had a great skit to replace one song that we had to scrap. Mark's teaching was great and really hit home with our people. Just when you least expect it and most need it God steps in and takes control.

After a great service I enjoyed a quick bite to eat with friends at Waffle House and then headed to Dalton with another friend. Topping of a great day I had the privilege of sharing the Gospel with the crowd at the Dalton March Swap Meet. (Thanks BB!)  Like Leeland's "Count Me In " song says sometimes I'm amazed this Love is for me.

Banquet Update #2

I had high hopes that this awards banquet would be different than most when Dr Scales said tonight was all about the students. If this were true I feel we could have eliminated over an hour of political butt kissing with introductions of everyone except the county dog catcher.

The student's portion of the program consisted of only about 15 minutes out of the nearly 2 hours of programming so who was it really all about?

Banquet Update

Broadway music, dancing, and bland chicken. Someone please shoot me now!!! I don't know if Mark had any hospital food today but I think I just did. :)
