Interesting article in USA Today, you can read it here. One sobering statistic was that 26% of those who dropped out of church at an early age did so because they found church members to be judgemental or hypocritical. Here's an interesting quote from the article:
"It seems the teen years are like a free trial on a product. By 18, when it's their choice whether to buy in to church life, many don't feel engaged and welcome,"
What can the local church do to met the needs of those who have just left high school? I think one thing that hurts this age group is when they leave a student program that is built around their unique needs and they enter the adult population of the church they are in for a culture shock. All of a sudden all of the music, messages and other things that were targeted at them are gone. Now they are expected to function in an environment that their 70 year old grandmother feels comfortable in and it just doesn't work for them.
